Legislation has passed in Europe that calls for the elimination of lead in electronic components by 2006. This has worldwide impact. While this legislation is law within the European Union, the global nature of electronics has far reaching effects into the global electronics market.

Electronic and electrical equipment specifically connected to the protection of the member States, arms, munitions, and war material are exempt from these directives. The exemption does not apply to military products not intended specifically for military purposes.
